About Wigan

Wigan Athletic were formed in 1932 at a public meeting after Wigan Borough folded, the latest of several attempts to sustain a senior club in the town. They bought Springfield Park, played in the Cheshire League and other regional competitions for decades, and were finally elected to the Football League in 1978 after 34 failed bids.

Under owner Dave Whelan the Latics rose from the fourth tier to the Premier League, spending eight seasons there from 2005 and reaching the 2006 League Cup final. In 2013 they beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup. They moved to their current stadium, which they share with Wigan Warriors, in 1999, and Bolton Wanderers are their main rivals.
