About Plymouth
Plymouth Argyle started life in 1886 as Argyle Football Club, an amateur side that drew many early players from former pupils of Dunheved College, now Launceston College. Where the Argyle name came from is still debated. The club took on Home Park in the early 1900s, turned professional in 1903 under its present name and joined the Football League in 1920 as a founder member of the Third Division.
Nicknamed the Pilgrims after the Mayflower's 1620 voyage from the city, Argyle play in green, and no league club is based further south or west. They have won the third tier five times, most recently in 2023, and reached the FA Cup semi-finals in 1984. Argyle have never reached the top flight, so Plymouth remains England's largest city without top-tier men's football. Exeter City are their main rivals.
