About Barnsley
Barnsley were formed in 1887 by the Reverend Tiverton Preedy, who named the new side Barnsley St Peter's after his church and set it up to give his parish a pastime in a town where rugby was then the main game. The club moved to Oakwell a year later, dropped 'St Peter's' from its name in 1897 and was elected to the Football League's Second Division in 1898.
Barnsley's biggest honour is the 1912 FA Cup, won as a Second Division side after a replay against West Bromwich Albion at Bramall Lane. They have spent more seasons in the second tier than any other club, had one Premier League season in 1997-98 and knocked out Liverpool and Chelsea on the way to the 2008 FA Cup semi-finals. Oakwell, home since 1888, keeps its corner floodlight pylons.
