About Bristol City
Bristol City trace their roots to Bristol South End, formed in 1894 and based at St John's Lane in Bedminster. The club turned professional and became Bristol City in 1897, then merged with neighbours Bedminster in 1900. City were elected to the Football League in 1901 and settled permanently at Bedminster's old ground, Ashton Gate, in 1904.
City's high point came early: Second Division champions in 1906, they were First Division runners-up a year later and reached the 1909 FA Cup final. A four-season return to the top flight from 1976 ended in three straight relegations from 1980, and in 1982 the 'Ashton Gate Eight' gave up their contracts to save the club. Bristol Rovers are their city rivals, with Cardiff across the Severn.
