About Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough FC was formed in 1876 by members of the town's cricket club, who met at the Albert Park Hotel. The club first turned professional in 1889, went back to amateur status three years later and lifted the FA Amateur Cup twice before committing to professionalism in 1899, the year it joined the Football League. Ayresome Park became home in 1903.
Boro almost went out of existence in 1986, when the club was liquidated and Ayresome Park padlocked, before a consortium put together by Steve Gibson rescued it. The move to the Riverside Stadium followed in 1995. Under Steve McClaren, Boro won their first major trophy, the League Cup, in 2004 and reached the UEFA Cup final two years later. Sunderland and Newcastle United are their north-east rivals.
