About Preston NE
Preston North End grew out of a cricket club formed in 1863, named after its base in the north end of the town. The members leased a field at Deepdale in 1875, played their first association match there in 1878 and formally adopted football in May 1880. Under William Sudell the club recruited players from Scotland and pressed for professionalism to be accepted.
A founder member of the Football League in 1888, Preston won the first championship without losing a match and lifted the FA Cup without conceding a goal, the first Double and the origin of the name 'the Invincibles'. They retained the title in 1890 and won the cup again in 1938. Deepdale's largest stand is named after Sir Tom Finney, and the main rivals are Blackpool.
