About Sheffield Utd
Sheffield United was formed on 22 March 1889 by members of the Sheffield United Cricket Club, who wanted a football team to fill Bramall Lane after a large crowd attended an FA Cup semi-final there. Charles Clegg, president of the cricket club, led the move. The club played in regional leagues before becoming a founder member of the Football League's Second Division in 1892.
United's most successful spell ran from the late 1890s to the mid-1920s, bringing the 1898 league title and four FA Cups. Bramall Lane, which staged its first football match in 1862 and shared space with cricket until 1973, is among the oldest major grounds still in use. The Blades nickname comes from the city's cutlery trade, and the Steel City derby with Sheffield Wednesday is the main rivalry.
