About Watford
Watford trace their roots to Watford Rovers, an amateur side formed by Henry Grover in 1881. Renamed West Hertfordshire in 1893, the club merged with Watford St Mary's in 1898 to become Watford FC. After winning the Southern League in 1915, Watford joined the new Third Division of the Football League in 1920 and moved to Vicarage Road two years later.
Watford's best-known era began in 1977, when manager Graham Taylor, backed by chairman Elton John, led the club from the Fourth Division to runners-up in the First Division in 1983. A UEFA Cup campaign and the 1984 FA Cup final followed. Watford have since had several Premier League spells, reached the 2019 FA Cup final, and count Luton Town as their main rivals.
