About Charlton
Charlton Athletic dates from 9 June 1905, when a group of teenagers from East Street in Charlton, south-east London, set it up. The young club moved between several local pitches before settling in 1919 at The Valley, a disused sand and chalk pit that its supporters helped to dig out. It turned professional the following year and joined the Football League in 1921.
Nicknamed the Addicks, Charlton lost the 1946 FA Cup final to Derby County and won the cup a year later. Safety concerns and money troubles forced the club out of The Valley in 1985, and a long supporters' campaign brought it home in 1992. Alan Curbishley's sides won promotion in 1998 and 2000, and the second Premier League stay lasted seven seasons. Millwall and Crystal Palace are its main rivals.
