About Portsmouth
Portsmouth Football Club was founded on 5 April 1898, when six local businessmen and sportsmen, with brewer John Brickwood as chairman, met in Old Portsmouth and bought farmland off Goldsmith Avenue, close to Fratton station, for a ground. Fratton Park staged its first match in September 1899 as the team went straight into the Southern League, and Pompey joined the new Third Division of the Football League in 1920.
Pompey won the FA Cup in 1939 and were English champions in 1949 and 1950. A second FA Cup followed in 2008, but two spells in administration sent the club down to the fourth tier by 2013, when a supporters' trust bought it. Michael Eisner's Tornante Company took over in 2017, and Pompey returned to the Championship as League One champions in 2024. Southampton are the main rivals.
