About Stoke
Stoke City gives 1863 as its founding year, although the earliest recorded match by Stoke Ramblers, the club formed by former Charterhouse pupils working as railway apprentices, dates from 1868. Having dropped 'Ramblers' from its name, the club moved to the Victoria Ground in 1878 and was a founder member of the Football League in 1888, adding 'City' to its name in 1925.
Stoke's only major trophy is the 1972 League Cup, won 2–1 against Chelsea at Wembley under Tony Waddington. Sir Stanley Matthews and Gordon Banks are among its best-known players. The club spent ten seasons in the Premier League from 2008, reaching the 2011 FA Cup final, and has played at what is now the bet365 Stadium since 1997. The Potteries derby is against Port Vale.
