About Carlisle United AFC
Carlisle United trace their origins to Shaddongate United, first recorded in 1896, and took the United name in 1904, the year the club counts as its foundation. The club played at Millholme Bank and Devonshire Park before moving to Brunton Park in 1909, and went through the Lancashire Combination and the North Eastern League, which it won in 1921/22. In 1928 it was elected to the Football League in place of Durham City.
Carlisle spent one season in the top flight, 1974/75, finishing 22nd in the First Division and reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals. The club won the Third Division in 1965 and 1995, the fourth tier in 2006, and the Football League Trophy in 1997 and 2011, and after relegation in 2004 it returned a year later through the Conference play-offs. Relegated from League Two in 2025, it finished third in the National League in 2025/26 and lost the play-off semi-final to Boreham Wood after extra time, so it stays in the National League for 2026/27. Barrow and Workington are its traditional rivals.
