About Scunthorpe United
Scunthorpe United were formed in 1899 and played at the Old Show Ground. In 1910 the club merged with North Lindsey United to become Scunthorpe & Lindsey United, joined the Midland League in 1912 and won it in 1926/27 and 1938/39. It was elected to the Football League in 1950, when the Third Divisions were expanded, and dropped the "& Lindsey" from its name in 1958.
The Iron won the Third Division North in 1958 and finished fourth in the Second Division in 1961/62, still their highest placing. In 1988 they moved to Glanford Park, the first new purpose-built ground of the modern Football League era, and later won League One in 2007 and the League One play-off final in 2009 to reach the Championship. Relegation in 2022 ended 72 years in the League and a second drop a year later took them to the National League North, but they won promotion through the 2025 play-offs and finished fifth in the National League in 2025/26, losing the play-off semi-final at Rochdale. They play in the National League in 2026/27, and Grimsby Town are their main rivals.
